But in your opinion it’s a crossover or a SUV Coupe ? There are those who say that for shapes and volumes it is certainly a crossover, there are those who instead look at the height from the ground and the sports tail, and then exclaim “ SUV Coupè ! “. From the parent company they let it be known that there is no doubt, it is precisely an SUV with a sporty look, and not only for its tail. Yet to me it looks more like a crossover . What a mess. Well the right answer is that, in the end, we spent some time with the new DS 4 and now you have it. tale.
AESTHETICS AND DESIGN
There are taut lines and clear shapes , no doubt about it. The aesthetics, in my opinion, echo the elaborate design that we find inside the almost 3D, multifaceted rear light assembly. Here, then, that the car body is characterized by various ribs that make it more “designed”.
The side proudly shows large diameter rims (up to 20 “) while the grille is topped by a beefy bonnet. The face shows headlights pointed with three luminous cores in it while the radiator grille has the same 3D pattern as above. The tail? is made up of the roof that merges into a rear spoiler and in the rear window , with the shoulders widen below and give a feeling of emphasized presence on the road.
Under the chapter of measures, the new DS 4 carries a length of 4, 40 meters, a width of 1, 83 meters and a height of 1, 47 meters.
INTERIOR E INTERIOR
If the aesthetics are elaborate, then we can define the interior design as refined but, above all, minimal . There is a feeling of spaciousness given by the “circular” design of the dashboard, the design of which blends into the doors. Worth noting is the excellent build quality as well as the good choice for materials: many soft-touch upholstery and in the dashboard and central console there is fabric or Alcantara-like.
It is necessary to point out the presence of a base wireless charging , one socket 12 V and, for the front passengers, a USB-C socket to connect our smartphone with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto . Fancy the new ventilation system with the central vents hidden behind the physical buttons to control the climate.
The vents are certainly not invisible, but they are well hidden just below. Air management is directed by deflectors placed inside the central dashboard. There is also an air-cleaning system for the passenger compartment, anti-particles.
TECHNOLOGY AND INFOTAINMENT
Excellent technological equipment inside the car with the classic duo; digital instrument panel and customizable in the menus, with the infotainment system which keeps its heart inside a touchscreen from 10 “. The latter has an extremely pleasant touch and responsive to the touch and presents the classic menus and functions including navigator, DAB radio, menus for climate and seat heating and cooling. But that’s not all.
A additional 5 “display (DS Smart Touch) also peeps out, which allows you to interact with the infotainment (DS Iris System) through gestures. It is placed on the center console, in a more comfortable position and also allows you to set shortcuts via the touch in order to connect us to very specific functions , such as calling a desired number without going through the Phone menu, just for do an example. The small display system was still in beta and to test its actual functionality we will have to wait for the final release.
There is also the head up display (DS Extended Head-up Display) revised and improved. This allows us to see, in augmented reality, many of the vital and travel information directly on the road, simulating a projection four meters away from us and on a diagonal of 21 “.
ROOM AND LUGGAGE
Our rear guests will have room for legs, shoulders and head, despite the roof descend . During long journeys, our friends can take advantage of two air vents, adjustable and manageable in the flows, as well as two sockets USB-C .
Luggage is large enough: 390 liters of standard capacity ( with the rear bench seat in its correct configuration) for the Plug-In hybrid; 430 liters for the thermal versions. There is a rather sunken loading surface but with the presence of rings, a socket 12 V and the courtesy light.
The new DS 4 is based on the EMP2 platform ; revised, improved and lightened to accommodate the new electrified engines. DS 4 presents itself to the public with a wide range of engines including the 1.2 PureTech petrol engines 130, the 1.2 PureTech 180 and, in addition, the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel version 130, all with stock automatic transmission .
For now, a version is missing 100% electric, but this will come later. For my preview test I chose the Plug-in hybrid electrified propulsion from 225 CV. It is composed of the 4-cylinder 1.6 turbo petrol of 110 CV coupled to an electric motor of 110 CV.
The battery? From 12, 4 kWh and guarantees us approximately 55 km of autonomy. I tell you right away that to recharge the small battery it will take about 7/8 hours from the domestic socket while with the fast public column it will be enough 15 / 20 minutes.
With the help of the active and intelligent suspensions (optional) the DS4 has proven not to suffer of lateral lying or rolls of any kind. Of course, she prefers the driving comfort and is able to digest every roughness of the road surface. The possibility of changing the DNA of this SUV Coupè (or was it a crossover?) Is appreciated by acting on the driving selector , located in the center console and which allows us to choose between some preset mappings.
These are the Sport and Comfort , which they allow you to emphasize or soften the responses coming from the steering and the gas pedal, not to mention the set-up that becomes more rigid through the electronically controlled suspensions. Or you can opt for mapping Hybrid or Electric . In the first, the engine will decide when and how to use the electricity produced by the thermal unit of 110 CV , while with the Electric we will be able to force the system to make us march only with the thrust of the electron.
It should be noted that the EAT8 automatic transmission behaved very well while driving urban, helping to favor the driving pleasure while I found the steering wheel to be communicative but not immediate. It is the right companion for a DS 4 that favors calm driving.
In approximately 100 kilometers passed in his company, the computer of edge reported a consumption that fluctuated between 6-6.5 liters each 100 kilometres. I adopted a quiet and urban driving, also covering a bit of the ring road. Without skimping on some sporadic acceleration to test the electron support as soon as the traffic lights clicked on the green.
DS 4 receives level 2 semi-autonomous driving by implementing a advanced cruise control with re-start function in case of stopped traffic. There is also the semi-automatic overtaking function, blind spot monitoring, rear traffic warning, DS Night Vision (thanks to the infrared camera that detects pedestrians and animals up to 200 meters, viewable in the instrument panel) and the damping system DS Active Scan Suspension which, using a camera, displays and anticipates the irregularities of the road surface making, if necessary, the suspensions more or less hard.
