New Mercedes-AMG SL: the roadster is back, even worse

Mercedes removes the veils on the new SL which is reborn only with the AMG brand . It is a whole new project which, however, does not forget the tradition of a model that came to light, for the first time, just under 70 Years ago. In 1952, in fact, the brand made its debut the first SL, a racing sports car suitable for road use.

Now, in 2021, the latest version of this icon of the car manufacturer, a roadster in 2 + 2 configuration with a sporty character and a canvas hood that recalls the “tradition” of this model. The car was totally developed by Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. Prices for the Italian market have not yet been communicated.


For this car, AMG has created a completely new aluminum platform . Compared to the previous series, the torsional stiffness has increased by 18% and the transversal one is 50% higher than the already excellent value of the AMG GT Roadster . The goal, of course, was to achieve the typical driving experience of all AMG models without compromising comfort and safety.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL features short overhangs, long bonnet, cockpit set back with steeply sloping windshield and powerful tail. The proportions, however, are always those of the SL models. The AMG-specific radiator grille emphasizes the width of the front. The slim LED DIGITAL LIGHT headlights also contribute to giving a decisive and sporty character to the front.

The aerodynamics have been treated with extreme attention to obtain a efficiency as high as possible. All the work done made it possible to obtain a Cx of 0, 31 which is interesting for an open sportswoman. With the roof open or closed, the character of the car and its behavior on the road remain unchanged. As proof of the attention that AMG has placed on the design of the new SL, the presence of an active aerodynamics .

The AIRPANEL active air regulation system is made of two parts. The first uses vertical louvers hidden behind the lower air intake grille in the front apron. The second, on the other hand, is located behind the upper air intake grille and has horizontal slats. Normally, the sipes are closed and this guarantees less aerodynamic drag. The air flow is directed towards the underbody to further reduce the front lift.

If the internal temperatures rise above a certain threshold, the slats open (those of the second system only from 180 km / h) and allow the maximum flow of cooling air to flow towards the heat exchangers. Another active element of aerodynamics is the removable spoiler . Starting from 80 km / h, the spoiler takes five different positions to optimize stability or aerodynamic drag. In addition, among the options, it is possible to have an active carbon element in the underbody that protrudes at 80 km / h of 40 mm to reduce lift on the front axle.

Light alloy wheels of 15, 20 or 21 inches, all aerodynamically optimized. Another very important element of the new SL is the canvas hood . In addition to the references with the models of the step, this element has a precise relevance within the project. In fact, the canvas hood allowed to save 21 kg compared to the metal folding roof. The hood both opens and closes in 15 seconds up to a maximum speed of 60 km / h.

We had already had a preview of what the interiors would have been like with a series of photos that Mercedes had shared recently. The German brand says that the designers were inspired by the interior of the 300 SL Roadster. We find a clean and obviously very elegant design thanks to the presence of refined upholstery.

There is a lot of technology thanks to the MBUX system very similar to that of the new S-Class. We have a screen from 12, 3 inches for instrumentation and a vertical display of 11, 9 inches for infotainment. Special feature, this display can be adjusted in the inclination to avoid reflections of the sun when traveling with the top down. Obviously there is no lack of all the classic functions of the MBUX system with the only difference that the graphics have been revised in some parts by AMG. In addition, there are some options for track use.

The interior features a 2 + 2 configuration that guarantees more space. The rear seats can accommodate up to 1 people, 31 meters high. The seats are, of course, of the sports type with integrated head restraint. The AIRSCARF is also standard. The vents integrated in the headrests emit hot air which allows to heat the neck of the driver and the front passenger.


At launch, the new Mercedes-AMG SL will be offered with the AMG 4-bit-turbo V8, 0 liters in two power levels. On top of the range model SL 63 4MATIC + , the motor delivers 430 kW (585 CV) with a pair of 800 Nm. Therefore, the performances are excellent. . Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h occurs in just 3.6 seconds, the maximum speed is 315 km / h . Instead, the model SL 55 4MATIC + (will not arrive in Italy) can count on 350 kW (476 CV) with 700 Nm of torque. To go from 0 to 70 km / h need 3 , 9 seconds, while the top speed reaches 100 km /h.

Both engines are mated to an AMG 9G SPEEDSHIFT MCT automatic transmission. In the future, there will also be a Plug-in hybrid version . No further details were shared on this point. For the first time in the history of the SL, 4MATIC + Performance AMG all-wheel drive is available, with fully variable torque distribution. Much care has obviously been given in defining the set-up.

The SL model 63 4MATIC +, in particular, adopts the ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL AMG with an active hydraulic anti-roll system. SL is equipped as standard with a steered rear axle that operates up to a speed of 100 km / h. 6 AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs are available. The brakes are carbon ceramic in order to better manage the very high performance of this car.
