The price war is across the board, the reference points are thinning out and extricating yourself in the crowded world of smartphones becomes more and more complicated, especially if manufacturers like Realme bring well-centered (and cheap) models such as the GT Neo 2 to the market.
Difficult to think of doing better on paper, for the same price, only Xiaomi (indeed, Poco) manages to keep up with some of its solutions, I think of the Poco F3 seen in spring which integrates the same hardware platform at an even lower cost. Dizzying placements that make you lose your sense of direction: in short, find yourself a smartphone with Snapdragon 870 under 300 euro is pure madness in the 2021, but the limits are not lacking in that case and Realme, although it has raised the bar a little more, he does not deviate much from that threshold with the newcomer.
The game that will now be played at home is curious given the even more aggressive positioning of the Realme GT flagship, thanks to a very similar equipment (see the cameras) and even more hardware Advanced with Snapdragon 888.
DESIGN AND DISPLAY
Glass on both sides and satisfactory materials for this price range, it is not the classic “assault midrange” that, taken in hand, throws us into despair, at contrary the feedback is positive. My enthusiasm does not go further because in this dark color you risk anonymity as usual, so much so that the only distinctive elements are the rear cameras at the top left. No detail, no particularity that really distinguishes it from the outside, in the midst of many it gets confused all too easily.
Amoled 6 display, 63 respectable inches, complete with a maximum refresh rate up to 120 Hz; boasts good color reproduction and excellent brightness, Realme even speaks of 1. 300 peak nits. Too bad for the ineffective oleophobic treatment , the panel gets dirty in fact quite easily and therefore you have to clean it frequently.
It doesn’t matter if under the information item we find the name “Realme UI”, it is the already known ColorOS 06 of Oppo that we have now learned to appreciate, both in terms of graphics, with the many steps forward made in recent years, and in terms of optimization. The Chinese house has found the right hardware / software alchemy, especially with certain System-on-Chip such as Snapdragon 870 mounted on this model.
The chip, I remember, is very popular in this second half of 2021 and Oppo itself has already used it on the Reno 6 Pro, positioned much higher than the GT Neo 2. It is certainly not just a question of platform and memory, the model of the parent company just mentioned is in fact much more valuable in some respects, especially the multimedia one with a system of cameras and more valuable lenses.
The performances are truly remarkable for a so-called midrange, the speed of response of the terminal almost leaves you to think you have a top of the range in your hands. Also thanks to the panel update frequency up to 120 Hz and very fast memories, are in fact of the UFS 3.1 which touch 1750 MB / s reading and 750 MB / s in writing.

Playing is a pleasure, thank you obviously to the powerful GPU, the sampling rate of the touch a 600 Hz (hard to hear) and stereo sound, all of which allow you to enjoy any title of the Play Store without any graphic limitations. Snapdragon 870 then has the advantage of providing a lot of computing power and not exceeding the temperatures, thanks also to the cooling system with integrated steam chamber on this model.
For those who want to be sure of having the best performance available there is the “GT mode” which pushes the platform to the maximum and, at the same time, brings the update frequency to 120 Hz. Given the unavoidable higher consumption, there is the option to automatically exit this mode after 15 minutes of break from the most onerous processes.
Powerful and clear audio, good vibration and full connectivity thanks to Snapdragon 870 which enables both WiFi 6 and support to 5G networks if available, which I have been able to take advantage of peacefully in the city in recent days. Of course it is dual-SIM, like almost all smartphones today.
AUTONOMY AND RECHARGE
Thanks to its adapter from 65 W in box, the GT Neo 2 enjoys the technology fast charging (which Realme calls SuperDart) which allows you to go from 0 to 100 percent slightly more than 35 minutes. Always rewarding experience, the added benefit is a 5 system. 000 mAh which guarantees excellent autonomy, in addition to its big brother Realme GT which instead integrates two units for a total of 4. 500 mAh.
I was able to conclude my days peacefully and, in cases where I did not leave with a full tank in the morning, it took me a few minutes to raise the bar and provide the energy needed to arrive in the evening.
PHOTO AND VIDEO
As anticipated, this is one of the sectors on which Realme had to save something by equipping the GT Neo 2 with a highly respectable system, effective but limited in some respects compared to more valuable competing models. An obviousness that had to be pointed out, however, the main image sensor from 64 MP allows you to shoot in any condition and with lots of detail.
Lights and shadows for videos which can be turned over ati in 4K up to 60 fps, a pleasure if we are well positioned because the quality is high but also a problem given the stabilization, problematic at this resolution. There is the option to compensate for all the shaking with Ultra Steady, but it comes down to detail and resolution to FHD to 60 fps, in short, a nice compromise.
Less exciting is the 8MP wide-angle which, compared to many others, loses a bit in certain situations and fears the evening more than others given a more contained detail. Still good overall, I noticed little distortion on the sides.
The third camera is a 2MP macro which makes little sense in my opinion, limited resolution and no autofocus. The front camera is also quite standard 16 MP which reproduces colors well but suffers a little in difficult conditions, HDR does not work as it should.
It is not beautiful to die for and certainly does not bring with it particular technological innovations, the GT Neo 2 is strengthened by an aggressive positioning and impact characteristics. I consider it a concrete, essential smartphone, capable of completing the required tasks and without frills, although a little more daring in the design would not have hurt.
The character Everything has been reserved for the “fluo green” color you see in this image above, with a more particular back cover because it is made up of a double strip that incorporates the company name and slogan. An eccentric touch that could be excessive for some and interesting for others, especially in terms of differentiation.
I would certainly recommend it to those who need a concrete and effective smartphone and does not pay too much attention to certain aesthetic details, it is not in fact its strong point and standing out today becomes increasingly complicated under a certain band. The numbers are on his side, in fact in China it has already reached one million units marketed and the debut in Europe opens up another possible success:
- Basic version with 8GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage a 449 € (in promo at 369 € for Black Friday)
- Top version with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage to 549 € (in promo at 449 € for Black Friday)
There remains only a real unknown at this point: the promo phase on the occasion of Black Friday is over 2021, in which will touch a minimum of 369 € immediately, will remain at this price or go up to 449 € list? The thing seems difficult to me, I would say almost nonsense if we consider that the older brother Realme GT is easily found around the 400 EUR…
