Trigger Warning: The following article contains information about suicide.

Logan Paul recently came under fire after posting a video on December 31st highlighting a man who committed suicide. With over fifteen million subscribers on YouTube, Logan Paul is currently one of the most successful social media influencers.

Logan Paul first gained fame through the popular 6-second video app Vine but was able to maintain his following after the discontinuation of the social media platform. Logan Paul is famous for his daily vlogs in which he connects with his fan base by extensively showing his everyday life for the world to see.

In the video, since been deleted from his YouTube channel, features Paul and several friends exploring the Aokigahara Forest in Japan, more famously known as the “Suicide Forest.” When the group comes across the body of a dead man hanging from a tree, they are in shock and begin talking about how depression and suicide is a serious issue and not a joke. The video cuts to the man’s dead body several times while blurring out his face. Paul then begins to crack jokes saying to his friend “What, you’ve never stood next to a dead guy?” and seems to laugh off the issue. Paul’s seemingly insensitivity on the issue led to a huge amount of backlash from people all over the world.

For many social media influencers, staying current with fresh and interesting content can be very difficult. This results in many YouTubers using what is known as “clickbait” to attract viewers. Many critics argued that Paul used the suicide to bring in more views to his channel without understanding the severity of his actions.

Paul posting the video signaled a spiraling down for his career. He has been criticized by his fans, celebrities, and the story has been featured in countless news outlets. Also, YouTube removed him from its popular channels and his characters in upcoming films and TV series have been cancelled. Paul has issued several apologies for posting the video and also told TMZ that he deserves a second chance.

In this day and age, social media influencers struggle to maintain relevance as fame can rise and fall instantaneously. Many influencers must rely on shock value and controversy to maintain their following, especially for those that do not have an exceptional talent. For Logan Paul, his search for original content took him too far and his career will suffer as a result.
