Terrific Tarheel State – More that NC has to Offer

Enduring through a tough but well-fought season, and after losing the championship the year before, the Carolina Tar Heels from Chapel Hill, NC won the NCAA Championship last night. The men’s basketball team has a history of being one of the best teams in the country, as well as UNC-Chapel Hill being ranked 30th best college in the United States by U.S. News. North Carolina is a very diverse and prosperous state that is worth visiting; here are some of the cool places to visit and food products/chains that were born in NC.

PLACES

  1. Biltmore Estate – This is the largest private estate in the United States and features the Biltmore House, a Châteauesque-style mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895. Located in Asheville, NC.
  2. Wright Brother’s First Flight – The historical place in Kitty Hawk, NC commemorates where the Wright Brothers had the first successful, sustained, powered flight in 1903.
  3. Outer Banks (OBX) – A cluster of barrier islands off NC’s coast that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. They have state parks, open-sea beaches, and shipwreck diving sites that make the trip to Dare County a popular holiday and vacation destination. Roanoke Island is also the host location to the first English-speaking colonists long before Jamestown.
  4. Mount Mitchell – Mount Mitchell is the highest peak in North Carolina and in the United States east of the Mississippi River, reaching an amazing elevation of 6,684 feet. The spectacular views from Burnsville, NC are worth the treacherous hike in the Pisgah National Forest.
  5. Jockey’s Ridge State Park – A beautiful national park that has the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern United States. Visit in Nags Head, NC.
  6. Blue Ridge Parkway – A national parkway that is noted for its scenic beauty, the parts that run through Western North Carolina are especially beautiful in the fall when the trees turn. Several waterfalls are hidden along the way and there are various different trails that can lead you to great views that are definitely picture-worthy! You can download a map of the Blue Ridge Parkway and save it to your iPhone so you don’t get lost.
  7. Mile High Swinging Bridge – The bridge was built to give visitors easy access to the breathtaking view from Grandfather Mountain’s Linville Peak. The 228-foot suspension bridge is always considered the highlight of a trip to Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC.
  8. Asheville, NC – Always in competition to be Beer City, USA, this cute and hipster little town has several local breweries, restaurants, and shops as well as a great downtown area and beautiful Parkway views.
