Oxford most notably lacks a football team. If you are in need of a team to root for, look no further than the Newton High School Rams. The ground game is led by UAB running back commit Nuru Tinch, and the stingy defense is led by Clemson defensive tackle commit Darnell Jefferies, Navy safety commit Jaison Taylor, and safety Elija Godwin, who is fielding offers from the likes of UVA, Miami (OH), Central Michigan, and Ball State to name a few schools.

The team’s 5-3 record is deceiving. The Rams are far better than their record suggests because they are in one of the toughest leagues in the country – the Georgia 7A Region 8. The Rams’ first loss came at the hands of the Lowndes Vikings (Valdosta), the #1-ranked team in the state and #22-ranked nationally.

The Rams share the league with national powerhouses like Archer (Lawrenceville), the #2-ranked in Georgia and #25-ranked nationally and Grayson (Loganville), the #3-ranked team in state and #28-ranked nationally. In their loss against Archer, a missed point after touchdown early in the game costed the team the tie. In their loss against Grayson, tandem of Grayson quarterback Demarcus Johnson and Kansas State wide receiver commit Jaquavius Lane stifled the usually-stingy defense. The Grayson defense, led by five-star outside linebacker recruit Owen Pappoe, kept the Newton offense out of the endzone for most of the game.

The Newton Rams look to finish their season strong. Two of their remaining three opponents have losing records. Though the Rams don’t have the opportunity to make significant waves this season, they will have an opportunity next season. If next season’s schedule is anything like those of the past, Newton will have real opportunities to upset some perennial powers and will be a sight to see.
