Friday November 10 – The African Caribbean Student Union (ACSU) hosted their annual showcase on Friday night in Williams Hall. The showcase involved dance, food, a fashion show, and an interactive quiz game.

Traditional foods from multiple African countries and the Caribbean were served such as Ghanaian and Nigerian jollof rice, banana/plantains, beef patties, Jamaican beer, lemonade, and jerk chicken .

Dances choreographed by Imani Craig and Princess Ekpo were performed by the ASCU Executive Board and other African and Caribbean students at Oxford. Colorful traditional clothing from multiple African and Caribbean countries was modeled in a fashion show. In addition, musical performances by Iman Ali, Michele Mugo, Casey Darko, and the Voices of Praise Gospel Choir were given throughout the show.

Sophomore Raya Machaca attended the event to support friends and appreciate the diversity of Oxford’s student body.

“I came to the ASCU showcase because not only were a lot of my friends either leading it or in it, but also I’m a huge supporter of cultural events at Oxford,” Machace said.  “I think its a really really diverse place and that we need to support these cultural clubs as much as possible. Every year they never fail to amaze me.”

More than 15 hours of work in meetings and dance practices were spent in preparation of the event, not including time spent in organization and creating the different aspects of the show. The time and effort the students invested paid off, however, in an excellently executed showcase that was rewarding for not only those in attendance but also those involved in production.

“I appreciate how Oxford is inclusive of different types of cultures and that we were able to express our African heritage that sometimes feels lost,” said ASCU Freshman Liaison Ether Tshimanga.

The showcase was one of many cultural clubs’ events that occur throughout the year, and the ASCU will be hosting another event in the coming semester.
