It was finally the time of year all Oxford students had been looking forward to: Halloweek. With midterm season upon us, students were ready for a week of fun activities, and this year’s Halloweek, hosted by the Student Activities Committee (SAC), did not disappoint.
This year, the annual haunted house’s theme was Oxford Horror Story, where students traversed through frightening rooms decorated by the seasons of the show American Horror Story. Students first entered to Freak Show and made their way through Hotel, Coven, Roanoke, and Murder House.
“I loved this year’s theme,” said First Year SAC member Emily Kim, “I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but it looked amazing.
SAC members spent the entire weekend before Halloweek setting up the famous haunted house and students were not disappointed.
Day two consisted of one of Oxford’s famous traditions: Dean Moon’s Haunted Tour. The tickets for this highly touted tour only took three hours for the tour to run out and there are obvious reasons for this.
Eighty lucky students were able to experience Dean Moon’s ghost stories on October 30, as they toured around famous landmarks of Oxford such as Few Monument and the Confederate cemetery. While Dean Moon shared scary stories, SAC and KPN members were stationed at these famous landmarks to liven the stories and make sure students did not leave without letting out a few screams.
On Halloween night, SAC hosted Spooky Stationz on the quad. Stations included a cake walk, pumpkin decorating, a petting zoo complete with an alligator and llama, cotton candy, a candy bar, donut eating contest, obstacle course, and a pumpkin dart game. If students went to every station, they received a free 2018 Halloweek t-shirt. On top of this, SAC also hosted a costume contest in the middle of the quad in which students had the opportunity to win free fall formal tickets.
After a busy three days, SAC hosted a more relaxing event on Thursday: Fallapalooza. The night consisted of mug decorating, bingo, and a cinnamon roll bar. While students enjoyed the festivities, SAC members dressed up in masks and beads to reveal this year’s fall formal theme: A Night on Bourbon Street.
Fall formal is on Friday, November 16 this year from 9 pm to 1 am at the iconic Fox Theatre in Atlanta. To celebrate the theme, students had the opportunity to win fall formal tickets during rounds of bingo at Fallapalooza as well. Chair of the event and SAC executive member Cameron Hedden commented on his event saying, “Fallapalooza turned out to be a great event. I think students appreciate the chance to just relax, eat good food, and listen to music with their friends, especially at this point in the semester.”
Halloweek ended on Friday night with a day of the dead themed tavern party hosted by Olé and SAC. With a mix of Latin pop and other top hits, delicious food such as pan de muerto from a local bakery, and a colorful photo booth, over 200 students danced the night away in Dooley’s Tavern to end Halloweek and kick off the weekend.
