The pandemic has changed our lives, we know. If until two years ago thinking of working most of the time at home was unthinkable and going to the gym regularly is completely normal, today our daily life has adapted to a new concept of living space and either for agile work, or for necessity, our house has had to adapt. New multifunctional spaces, equipped office corners and, why not, small spaces for training of various kinds have appeared in many homes and we too have adapted.

For a few months we began to make spaces more liveable which, initially improvised and created in a simple way, allowed us to experience the restriction of the home in a more pleasant way. At a distance of approximately 18 months from the first lockdown, although the situation has definitely improved, for many people it is still necessary to spend a lot of time at home for work and crowded places like gyms do not always give that sense of security that instead offers the place we live in.

A condition that easily leads to less physical activity also for the simple fact that, not going to work, those 2km (personal average daily distance ) on foot between vehicles, parking and traveling are no longer done with the same frequency.

So, a solution like the one in this review could be an idea very apt. We liked the concept so much and other colleagues and friends also decided to try a treadmill after seeing it in use at home.

Before thinking about buying a treadmill, you need to ask yourself a very important question: do I want to use it only for walking or also for running?

A substantial difference that actually divides the market in two segments:

  • the products reaching a maximum of 6KM / h, indeed suitable for walking even in a sustained way
  • products that arrive and exceed 10 KM / h which are the choice for those who also want to run.

WalkingPad R2 is placed in the second band reaching the 10 KM / h of maximum speed and allowing not only a light workout but also a run at a good pace that will allow you to really train and stay fit without leaving home.

Although KM / h cannot be considered a running at high speed, considering the width of these products, the type of frame and the safety that you must have when running, we assure you that 10 KM / h are more than enough to work hard, sweat, train and at the same time running quietly without having to concentrate on the type of step and the correct position of our body on the mat.

R2 then has weight among its strengths. It is in fact a product that is absolutely not light and this is good as it can be used without any problem even for tall people who have a considerable weight, especially considering the running phase where the body releases a lot of energy at each impact with the mat. With a person of approx. 90 KG running to 10 KM / h the WalkingPad is extremely stable, perfectly still and gives a truly excellent sense of strength and solidity. There are products on the market that allow you to reach speeds even double, whose weight is obviously greater, but as a whole this R2 has a really interesting price / speed / strength / size compromise.

All the elements are assembled in a perfect way, the materials are excellent and the plastic is used in the correct places to lighten some elements but it is not used for the basic structure which instead is made of steel and absorbs vibrations very well, strokes and clearly our stride.

Despite the weight, R2 has a really effective locking system and, thanks to the two wheels placed in the lower front part, you can easily carry it around the house . Obviously it is not a suitable product to be moved between one floor and another, basically two people or a sufficiently strong person are needed.

It being understood that this WalkingPad is not a small product to hide behind a wardrobe – due to its characteristics – once closed it can still be easily inserted under a high enough bed, behind a corner of a piece of furniture or in closets or areas of the house where it does not bother too much.

The opening and closing are immediate and once the release mechanism is understood, in less than 30 seconds you will pass from the fully closed product to the start of the walk or run (and vice versa).

Up to now we have talked about running and stability but one of the characteristics of the product (and others analogues) is that it can also be used for walking. The speeds vary in steps of 0.5M / h and start from 1 arriving at 10. Above 6KM / h, variable according to your height, a light run starts, below you can walk.

Using R2 with the vertical support lowered , the carpet will automatically enter in WALK mode , walking, limiting the speed to a maximum of 4KM / h. This is a safety setting that allows you to place R2 even under a desk and to be able to walk even while we are working to the computer.

We have used it for walking during computer conversations, meetings and even long meetings. Not only will you do activities, but the walk will not make you out of breath and, being at home, you will not participate in the conversation with a thousand external noises that you would have walking on the street.

Furthermore , in this mode you can vary the speed simply by increasing or decreasing the pace of the walk without necessarily having to use the app or the remote control. Obviously always with a maximum of 4KM / h.

Using R2 with the vertical support raised instead, you can also take advantage of the running mode or better, there is no longer the limit of 4KM / h . You can select any speed range but you lose the automatic adaptation depending on the pace of the step. It will therefore be necessary to use the remote control or application to adjust the speed that will not follow the rhythm of our step or run.

As said initially, the weight and strength of the product make the difference while running. The steel structure, the external aluminum platform and the plastic handle are very well built and allow you to train without worries. Furthermore, the absence of a perceptible weld on the mat, makes the run very fluid and without changes in support during training.

R2 is part of the extended family of Xiaomi products but is not properly connected within the ecosystem of the company. The application is in fact proprietary and allows you to manage the WalkingPad easily through a direct connection.

The interface is in English but easily understood and clear enough to immediately understand where the various settings, items and functions are. Unfortunately, the synchronization of the carpet with the smartphone only takes place if you have the app open and if you do a workout without launching the software, that data will be lost. Nothing serious but it is certainly a sin; instead, the possibility of sharing the training with Google Fit is good.

If a treadmill did not I would have considered, the new lifestyle I had to get used to led me to evaluate the purchase. After a few weeks trying and using two different products, I can confirm that this type of product makes absolutely sense regardless of the pandemic.

Being able to train and even just walk while doing other things, especially if you work a lot on the computer or on the phone, being at home / office is a habit that you will start immediately and an activity that you will do with pleasure and almost without realizing it. Also consider keeping a similar product in an office, perhaps in a common area or at home behind a door. Being easily foldable and movable with the wheels, you can place it wherever you want.
